**DESCRIPTION**
Authentic 17th-century silver commemorative medal celebrating the Liberation of Vienna in 1683, one of the most decisive events in European history. The medal honors the allied victory of Emperor Leopold I of the Holy Roman Empire and King Jan III Sobieski of Poland, whose forces successfully lifted the Ottoman siege of Vienna.

The obverse features a detailed panoramic siege scene of Vienna, including city fortifications, advancing armies, and an imperial eagle symbolizing victory and divine protection. The reverse presents an extensive Latin inscription naming the allied rulers and commanders involved in the liberation.

This medal was produced as a historical commemorative piece rather than for circulation and was intended to celebrate and record the victory for posterity.

**LATIN INSCRIPTION (TRANSLATION)**
“Under Emperor Leopold, with John (Jan III), King of Poland, the Electors of Bavaria and Saxony, and the Duke of Lorraine, and their armies fighting with full force, Vienna, having been besieged, was liberated.”

**CONDITION**
The medal is in very fine to extremely fine condition for its age. Original silver surface with natural antique patina. Light to moderate wear consistent with a 17th-century medal. No polishing, no repairs, no mounting holes. Details remain clear and inscriptions are fully legible. The warm tone visible in some photographs is caused by lighting and not gold plating.

**HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE**
The 1683 Siege of Vienna marked a turning point in European history, ending the Ottoman advance into Central Europe. Medals such as this were issued to commemorate the victory and honor the allied Christian forces that secured the city.
